First XI vs. Talgarth - 29 Jul - Fifteen Year Old Watkins rips through Talgarth!

Canon Frome went into the game knowing that a win would probably put them into a safe position in the table with a month left of the season.

Once again Andy won the toss and decided to have a bat on the pitch that looked bouncy and hard and an outfield like glass!

Andy & Louis once again opened and after a shaky start (both dropped on 0!) Andy started to open up with a succession of boundaries but was finally bowled for 32. Louis went on and when Dave Huckerby was adjudged LBW for 8 it brought Neil Andrews to the wicket. Neil set out to take the attack to Talgarth and was well set when caught out for 40 leaving Louis to bring up his 50.

Marcus came and went, hitting 1 six in between and then followed a run of low scores including James Hughes for 2, Matt Richards for 5, Dan Watkins for 5 & Harry Orgee for 4. In the mean time Louis had moved onto 83 and was out caught on the boundary trying to bring up another six! This left Lloydy & Terry Cassidy to use up the overs, Lloydy swished at a wide one and Frome were all out for 205 with 3 extra overs for Talgarth.

Louis excluded a pretty ordinary batting performance on a good track meaning Frome would have to bowl Talgarth out!

Louis opened up and got a wicket off the left handed opener while Andy ran in at the other end. After being smashed to the boundary a couple of times bowling full Andy decided that pitching in his own half of the wicket was a good idea. The opener then top edged a short ball into his head and had to leave the ground to go to hospital and when Louis had their number 3 expertly caught by Dave Huckerby at slip, they were effectively 3 down.

After seeing one player going to hospital from a blow to the head you'd have thought the following batsmen may have put a helmet on but their captain took the second blow to the head from yet another short ball. To his credit he carried on batting and played some gutsy shots to follow. Neil again bowled tight (0-9) and Dave Huckerby added variety (1-15) but the 2 swingers, Lloydy (0-28) & Terry Cassidy (0-28) struggled to control their sideways movement. At the other end Louis was taking wickets regularly ending up with 5-49 off 9 overs.

The last wicket of the day was taken by Andy there opening bowler edging one behind to James Hughes and with Talgarth not wishing to risk there 10 year old batsmen in deteriorating light they finished 150 all out.

A good day had by Frome with no doubt over the man-on-the-match, next week Garnons @ homeā€¦..
