Second XI vs. Martley - 14 May - Frome's first loss of the season (hopefully the last)

On arrival to the ground it was the general feeling whoever won the toss would field first, so it was left to the "badge-miester general" to win the toss, he didn't. So the canons batted first.

Richards and Hughes got off to a steady start with Richards finding the middle of his bat early on, and Hughes in support. Until Richards was given out LBW for 14, and after a brief appearance by B. Child(s) he soon went for 6, and Hughes followed for 15. S. Andrews played some nice shots but kept finding fielders and departed for 9. This bought M. Godsall and P. Andrews the crease to re-build the innings from 51 for 4 scoring 24 and 34 respectively. Both scoring with the elegance and panache the Frome's hallowed turf has become accustom to. But after their demise and a good solid solid 16 from S.Cottrell, Frome collapsed to all out for 138.

Frome knew they had their work cut out but always felt they were only just short of a competitive target on this pitch. Some good fielding was needed to save runs and this was demonstrated throughout by J. Gosall and W.Godsall in the covers. Opening the bowling was B. Child(s) who bowled really well throughout and P. Andrews (12 overs, 1 for 41) who opened with "pace", not his usual spin. After a tweak to the fielding positions to Whittaker at slip and Hughes at point P. Andrews bowled perfectly to his field serving one up short and wide outside off-stump to spring the trap. Hughes rose like a athletic dolphin on the crest of wave to take the chance. B. Child(s)(2 for20) at the other end applying pressure, found the edge for Whittaker to take another good catch, and suddenly the game was on. But a good middle order partnership for Martley and tough conditions for C. Cottrel l(who bowled well with out reward into the wind). Saw their number 4 score 55, before eventually going LBW to Child(s), and their number 5 score 29, before Hughes (2 for 26) got him. By now the game was all but gone as their batsmen chipped of the singles to win. Well bowled and fielded Frome, just needed more runs to play with.
