Second XI vs. Brintons - 25 Jun - Frome come close as dropped catches prove costly

Stand-in skipper S. Andrews won the toss and put Brintons in to bat on a damp track.

Frome got off to a good start, with N. Andrews (1-9), who bowled an incredibly economical spell, picking up a wicket in the early overs. Opener M. Davies began to find the boundary with ease, but the Frome bowlers managed to keep the runs down and wickets began to fall at regular intervals at the other end, with L. Cottrell (3-47) and C. Cottrell (2 -31) bowling tight spells. M. Davies (47) was eventually undone by some smart field placing as B. Shimwell, still on the way back after fetching the ball from the boundary the previous delivery, took a good catch as the batsmen picked him out perfectly. Brintons looked to be in a bit of trouble at 82-6, but a host of dropped catches by the Frome fielders let them off the hook, the most costly mistake coming from the usually reliable J. Hughes who had a rare off-day in the field. B. James (72) and S. James (27*) took advantage of the lives that the fielders gave to them and put on 92 for the seventh wicket. The partnership was eventually broken on the last ball of the innings when B. James was superbly run out by wicket keeper S. Cottrell and Brintons ended on 174-7 after their 45 overs.

The Frome innings got off to the worst possible start with C. Barnett being caught behind off the very first ball of the innings. J. Hughes (6) and P. Andrews (3) followed quickly afterwards and Frome were in a bit of trouble. S. Andrews joined M. Godsall at the crease and started to rebuild the innings, but was dismissed for 17 after giving the cover fielder catching practice. This brought N. Andrews in to bat, and with Frome well behind the required run rate he showed his intent to score runs quickly from the off. Both N. Andrews and M. Godsall (who continues to show why he is the rock of the Frome batting line up) began to regularly dispatch the ball to all corners of the ground until it got to the point where the fielding side placed all of their fielders on the boundary to stop the flow of runs. It looked as if Frome were on course for an unlikely victory until both N. Andrews (47) and M. Godsall (54) were undone by in-swinging yorkers by T. Davies (4-23) who bowled very nicely. It was then left to S. Cottrell and C. Cottrell to see out the remaining overs and ensure that Frome got the losing draw. Frome ended on a very respectable 167-6, only 8 runs short of the target.
