Under 11 XI vs. Colwall - 22 Jun - “A great result for the U11 another close game”

On a beautiful sunny day at CFCC, our opposition had not appeared and at 09:50. “Coach guessed a fixture list gaff was the cause” and so it turned out. The game started an hour late, Frome lost the toss and Colwall fancied batting. Ben D and George H opened the bowling for Frome with some good deliveries however the first Colwall pair played some accomplished shots and the rattled up to 218 in 3 overs before Ben grabbed the first wicket when the batsman spooned a catch to Sam at mid-off, but after 4 overs Colwall looked in control on 225. Joe D and Will B took over and set about Colwall with some very accurate bowling which took several wickets and reduced the run flow. Ronan CH bagged the wicket of Colwall batsman Harry S caught at gully by George H off the last ball of the 12th over Colwall were 249 for 4. The last 8 overs bowled by Charlie, Ronan, Sam and Marcus were exceptional with only 18 runs being scored (14 off the bat) but importantly Frome taking 6 wickets including 2 with the last 2 deliveries of the innings by Marcus to decimate the Colwall score and leave them on 218. All the fine bowling was backed up by some good fielding, wicket keeping from Benn W and all round team fielding performance. “Well done boys job half done”
CF bowling figures:
Ben D – 3 – 0 – 26 -1 / George H – 2 – 0 – 20 – 0 / Joe D – 2 – 0 – 12 – 0 / Will B – 3 – 0 – 6 – 2 / Allan W – 1 -0 – 9 – 0 / Charlie – 1 – 0 – 2 – 1 / Ronan CH – 2 – 0 – 12 – 1 / Sam B – 3 – 1 – 4 – 2 / Marcus – 3 – 0 – 7 – 3
In reply to a modest 218, our boy’s confidence was high and their excitement building with the thought of back to back wins and taking the scalp of Colwall they set about their job of protecting their wickets and knocking off the runs required. The opening pair of Marcus / George started well against some keen bowling both played straight to keep the ball out and when George connected with the ball drifting on his legs, a solid shot through square leg resulted in 4 runs. CF 210 off 4. 2nd pair of Ben W and Allan W continued well despite losing a couple of wickets between them to good Colwall bowling, Ben stepped up to take the lion share of the deliveries to protect Allan and finish with 7 runs, CF now 205 after 8 overs “match still alive”. Our 3rd pair of Ben D and Joe D ran extremely well between the wickets as a pair looking for any mistakes from the fielding team to add runs to the team’s total. After their 4 overs they were unbeaten and the Frome total stood at 222 off 12. The CF 4th pair of Will B and Ronan, carried on in much the same way and with Will B cracking a good 4 in the 16th the pair got 8 runs and CF were on 214 after losing some wickets, nearly there! “Four overs to go, 5 runs to win, lose no wickets, no pressure (not)”. Last pair at the crease, Charlie and Sam batted with confidence, Sam in attack when he despatched a couple of balls to the boundary for fours and Charlie in defence to see out the final over to end on 224 to complete a thrilling victory. “Very well played boys Job done”
