Under 15 XI vs. Ross-on-Wye - 15 Jun - Roll up roll up - Another thrilling match

A well attended match with Canon Frome being able to supply extra squad members to the Ross team for fielding. It is a source of some pride that this club has such a thriving junior section when other clubs appear to be struggling. We must be doing something right. Great too to see Alan Watkins, one of our senior ex players, down at the ground supporting our youngsters.
Weve got enough players, but they put in a good performance too, with the whole team gelling well and playing tightly together for each other. Our captain Eric Harris scored 22 runs, Tom Davies scored 18 runs and John Watkins scored 27 runs (not out) which included a mammoth heave for SIX right over the furthest boundary and into the orchard! Make no mistake, this was an emphatic six at any level of the game, not just U15s. At the end of our innings we sent Jasper Gilbert out to join John Watkins and the ranks of the Canon Frome batters who have stepped out to face the very last ball of an innings. He equipped himself well scoring a single off the one ball. This is positive stuff and shows that as a team we are beginning to realise that every run counts, every boundary thwarted counts. Not surprising though given the scores in our recent U13 and U11 matches!
Usually when weve played half the match well we decide to let the other half of our game slide but this time we kept our foot on the pedal and there were some notable fielding achievements:
Marcus Richards behind the stumps didnt let a single bye go through!
Jasper Gilbert took two wickets for 14 off 4 overs!
Sylvie Slinger took two wickets for 10 off 2 overs!
Olly Parker took one wicket but it was the first ball of the Ross innings and a wicket maiden to boot!
Very dispiriting stuff for the opposition and set the tone nicely for the rest of our attack.
Tom Davies took a fine catch out in the field and Sylvie stopped a rocket of a shot that would have gone to the boundary for sure. Thats like scoring three runs.
It looked like we may be heading for a third draw in succession for the Frome but concentration in the field and excellent tight bowling in the last over from Menno meant we secured our victory by 8 runs!
Thanks to Phillippa Slinger, Ruth Ashman, Agnes Davies and Feya Recordon for providing the excellent food for the players (and spectators). Nom nom nom.
Thanks to James Godsall for umpiring at short notice. Thanks to Sally Booth for scoring and to Matt for sitting with her for part of the game; it can get lonely doing the scoring and its such an important job so do please keep her company (without distracting her of course). Thanks to David Harris for slinging the mower around and Mark Godsall for preparing a really good wicket for the game. Finally, thanks to everyone present for making it another great evening down the Frome!
