Under 9 XI vs. Monmouth - 19 Jul - Another last ball thriller

Rain overnight and early morning but the forecast was accurate and on cue the sun came out at 10am. it turned into a lovely day. Nonetheless Monmouth were wise to put Frome in to bat on a drying wicket. Pressure was on from the start in this return fixture that went Monmouth’s way in the first game. They returned with a strong well drilled team. Game on
The opening pair of Henry and Alex made an impressive start taking the score onto 226. Gabs and Bertie faced some very accurate bowling that was compounded by the wind effect causing late swing. Zac and Dougie benefited from some less accurate bowling and the score pushed on to 257. Ollie and Edward were pair 4. Ollie was expansive once again securing 14 with great support from Edward. With only 8 players available, Alex and Henry were asked to bat again for the final 4 overs, the first of which was a maiden. Alex then opened up, hitting 3 x 4s in a row. Henry managed to steal a single of the last ball to take the total to a round 300
After a brief break, Monmouth’s opening pair came to the crease and made it clear they were going for the total. They were well ahead of the rate from the first few overs. Frome fielded very well on a small pitch, especially so when you consider they had just 8 players. Bowling was a little less accurate than in previous weeks but Frome took some crucial wickets and kept the score in check. Wickets for Dougie, Henry and Zac. So to the final over. Monmouth required 4 to win. First ball was a wides so 2 to win from 6 good balls, a single, and scores tied, then 4 dots and one ball left. great accurate ball from Alex, a desperate run attempt and Alex throws down the wicket with a direct hit to take Monmouth back to 295 and win for the Frome
Frome were wining in the rain at Eastnor last week too. Thanks as ever to our supporters, to Rob for umpiring and Marcus for scoring. Last game of the season next Sunday, it will be a tough one v Brockhampton
