First XI vs. Burghill - 01 Jul - Confident Frome struggle to compete!

Frome went into this game in confident mood after beating Llandrindod last week. Things started to go badly though from the off as skip lost the toss and Burghill decided to bat.

Louis bowled with great line and length again and was accompanied by Neil (2 -39) as skip was struggling with a foot injury. Things started well but things soon went away from Frome as their batsmen started hitting some loose deliveries and the spin of Orgee and off a few yards skip couldn't stem the tide as Burghill reached 144-1 of 20 overs. At this stage Frome were staring down the barrel of a league record score.

Things picked up however after a fantastic spell from Pink Floyd (Andy Lloyd) and the spin of Dave Huckerby (3-66) after a shaky start, slowed up Burghill. Andy them came back on and bowled much better line and length and in the end kept them down to a reasonable 264-6.

Now Frome at the beginning of the season may have been thinking about surviving for a losing draw but not the new confident Frome. They signalled their intentions with Neil & Andy going out to bat. They started reasonably well until Neil (9) was adjudged LBW. Now for those of you that don't know Neil is Never I mean NEVER LBW. Say no more the toys were out of the pram, I will leave this here for further discussions on the newly created message board. Andy (16) followed soon after never looking confident and Marcus also fell cheaply (4). This brought the 2 James' to the wicket, Hughes & Fortnam both played very well until James was caught for 33.

From hadn't still given up the chance of victory but it would need Fortnam and the rest to bat well. When Huckerby (0) and Orgee (0) fell it was going to be to bigger task. Louis (5) got a harsh LBW and Matt (12) came out to boost the total for more points but when they fell and Fortnam played a loose shot on 46 it left Lloydy and Mr Website (Malcolm) to see out the overs. Now most of you would associate seeing out the overs by dead batting in a "Robin Mence Stylie" (Sorry Rob, but you have retired, come back and prove me wrong) instead the decided attack was the best form of defence. With slashes over slips and pulls form of stump they dragged Frome up to a respectable 173 for 9 to give Frome 8 points.

All in all, Frome fielded fantastically but really didn't bowl enough balls in the right areas and the two James' apart didn't apply themselves well enough when batting. Bing on top of the league Goodrich next week!
