Under 15 XI vs. Colwall - 22 May - Shaky start by both teams ends up as a close thing

This match was going to be a friendly until John Masefield Yr8's match was cancelled and we suddenly found ourselves with Sam Booth, Charlie Cresswell and Ronan Chowns-Higgs available to play for the u15s. Colwall in the true spirit of the game were more than happy to revert at short notice to a proper league fixture. Both teams lost early wickets cheaply but then things began to settle for both teams' innings. Tom Day, unfortunate with his batting, more than made up for it by clean bowling three of Colwall's batsmen. Arthur Harris gave a classic performance straight from the Arthur Harris school of captaincy by scoring a quick 19 including a massive 6 launched out of the park. 'He's there for a good time not a long time!' And fun to watch it is.
His brother George ended the match on 28 Not Out alongside Charlie Cresswell with 14 Not Out - only a lack of overs thwarting their scoring. Joe Davies took a very important catch off Jonny Mackereth's bowling to dismiss Colwall's Alex Whittaker who was frankly becoming a bit of a nuisance staying in the middle and scoring 40 runs.
Mention should be made of Sam Booth who had to come in a lot sooner than he was probably expecting at number 3 to steady the ship with Arthur and then Marcus and gave a fine batting display eventually retiring on 53 Not Out. The whole team concentrated well in the field and really worked hard to stop the boundaries which in the end makes a big difference - many a certain 4 was restricted to just 2 and that becomes wearing for the opposition's batsmen. Ronan was sliding all over the outfield using ankles and legs in an effort to stop the boundaries.
As always, the welcome was warm at Colwall and we look forward to reciprocating their generous hospitality when they visit us later in the season. Thanks to Luke for umpiring, Matt for scoring and Simon for helping out. It's great to have the seniors there to watch and give advice.
