Second XI vs. Birlingham - 19 May - Important to toss well!

Following last weeks cancellation due to bad weather the team were looking forward to playing their 2nd league game of the season. With the pitch affected by overnight rain it was vital to win the toss. Needless to say it was lost with the home team being inserted for the 2nd game running.

On a slow wet wicket the opening pair of P Lawton and S Denton made immediate inroads into the Canon Frome batting order reducing Frome to 26 for 2 after 6 overs. Opener D Child made steady progress however after 30 overs the home team had struggled to 76 for 6.T Nixon made a solid contribution scoring 20 in a partnership of 50 with Child.

The bowling continued to be tight helped by J Sturn who took 4 of 29 in a 14 over spell.

Canon Frome were balled out in the last over for 121 with Child contributing 61 and P Lawton returning 3 for 26 after 10 overs.

After the interval Birlingham made it clear that they intended to visit the Trumpet before 6.30pm making a steady start helped by L Smith D Hill. Following an accurate spell C Cotterell deservedly took the wicket of J shepherd for 3 but the success was shortlived. Smith (45) and particularly Hill (53) bludgeoned their way to victory and after 22 overs reached the required total. During the run chase some respectability was achieved with Frome taking 3 wickets allowing the home side to take a well-deserved point.

Thought for the day – the captain needs to win the toss!
