Second XI vs. Himbleton - 02 Jun - More fight but same result!

As predicted last week winning the toss is definitely not going to happen this year. This is the continued conclusion of Andy Rogers and David Child both of whom have lost the toss on every single occasion this year. (What's the odds on that? – Answers to Mat Please)

On a drying pitch it wasn't surprising that Himbleton asked Frome to bat however excellent stroke play from Max Backhouse took the score on to 31 after 6 overs until D child was bowled off his legs for 2.

Dan Watkins and Max steadied the ship and forged a superb partnership of 68 before W Byrne bowled Watkins for 32. Further good contributions from Mat (the red dragon) Morgan (19) and Calvin Cotterell (13) provided middle order impetus before the finale was delivered from the youngest man on the pitch George Whittaker. Batting at number 10 George severely damaged the bowling figures of Himbletons C Pretty scoring 16 in a series of swashbuckling mid wickets drives.

In short the team performed really well with the bat reaching a total of 184 for 9 of out allotted 45 overs. A record so far this season with more promise to come from the likes of the red dragon (Mat) and Dan (I really should believe in myself) Watkins.

So restricting the home side to 184 was out target and following an excellent team talk from Terry Nixon the team prepared to roll its sleeves up and graft for its 1st victory of the 2007 campaign.

The reply was steady enough with D Jenkins and M Preece taking the score to 40 before Backhouse took the important wicket of M Preece when removing his off stump. So far so good!

More to come with C Cotterell capturing P Taylor for 0 having spent 19 minutes working out where his 1st run was coming from. At this point the game was in the balance with the ascendancy switching from side to side almost over by over.

At 154 for 7 the game really was in the balance that is until C Pretty made a dogged 19 whilst his partner S Jenkins poured on the agony for the Frome striking consecutive boundaries off the Frome attack. In the end sensible batting, especially the picking up of quick singles, saw Himbleton home scoring the required 185 runs for 8 with 2 overs to spare.

This was a thrilling game of cricket and all the Frome players contributed either with the bat, ball or in the field. Well done to all including Julie Backhouse who performed a Stirling job as lead scorer for the away side.
