Second XI vs. Old Elizabethans - 16 Jun - Great game, great teas but another close defeat!!!!!!!!!!

With the introduction of Captain Will Mawby and the very talented Australian Bruce Raynard the Canon Frome 2nd team travelled to Worcester with high hopes of recording their first victory of the season.

Loosing the toss again wasn't a surprise neither for that matter was being asked to bat first? On a drying wicket (we should be specialists now) the opening partnership of David Child and Mark Godsall didn't last long with Godsall being dismissed in the 2nd over without scoring. It has to be said that the catch to dismiss Mark was exceptional – this will be no consolation to Mark.

Next to the wicket was Mr C. This partnership was more fruitful with the score moving on to 42 before the second wicket went down.

Next was Bruce. Great expectations were placed on his broad antipodean shoulders and initially her didn't dissapoint. His opening scoring shot was a delicious back foot cut through the covers which ended in 3 runs but not before Bruce's large frame had ended on the floor having slipped. Very funny for those in close proximity.

The score ticked on before Child was dismissed for 39 bringing the talented Mawby (clearly Will not Allen – sorry Allen) to the crease. Will played some lovely shots before being bowled by D Rouse for 23.

Despite some late order flourishes by Armitage, Nixon and Hills the final score of 132 was always going to be difficult to protect.

After the break Mr C and Will Mawby opened with gusto both of whom took early wickets pressuring OE's into mistakes and at one stage struggling at 18 for 4 wickets. Good catches by Morgan and Godsall made the difference and on taking the firth wicket at 52 gave the away side real hope. However their middle order pair of I Bigastaff and A Hopwood played very well and calmly progressed the score nearer the required total of 133. At 91 a further wicket was taken again providing some encouragement to the Frome. Alas it wasn't to be with captain Colin Rees guiding his team home with 6 overs to spare.
