First XI vs. Burghill & Tillington - 17 May - Frome close again but still without a win!

Canon Frome were looking to make up for the disappointment of losing out to a close finish last weekend by visiting newcomers to the league, Burghill this weekend.

Frome won the toss and elected to bowl first and in the 2nd over L "I'm the king of the chavs" Watkins (3-32) picked up 2 wickets putting Burghill on the back foot. When opening bowler Squealy Bealey (2-25) took Burghill skipper Box's wicket the teenage pair had reduced Burghill to 31-5. Preece (70) then batted well with the most fortunate Tingle (57) to resurrect the innings.

Things then conspired against the away side with a critical decision being made by the most officious of umpires. Young opening bowler Beale left the field in discomfort and was only able to come back on and field in the slips. Dan Watkins bowled took the edge and Beale caught Tingle in the slips. The call from Burghill's umpire was, "dead ball, 5 penalty runs & not out" on the basis of Beale not asking to re-enter the field of play. Skipper Rogers asked Box (Burghill captain) to intervene but no action was deemed necessary.

Burghill managed to reach 229 before Rogers (2-55) managed to take the last 2 wickets.

Frome still confident of chasing down the total set about well with Fortnam (47) and P. Andrews (10) leading the way. When N.Andrews (9) and L. Watkins (18) fell it left Rogers (34) to take the attack to Burghill. With Styles (16) at the wicket the game was finely balanced but when Styles was bowled and Rogers fell to the tightest of run outs it was left to teenager "Six hitter" Beale (33) to try and win the game for Frome. They fell 19 runs short of victory when they were bowled out for 211 with victory snatched away from them once again.

Unfortunalty the game will be remembered for one souring incident which even Box after the game admitted was result changing. Anyway, back at home next week against Worcester Dominies again with confidence they can get the first victory of the season.
