Second XI vs. Presteigne - 08 Jul - Rocky start proves no obstacle

Canon Frome turned up early the away game at Presteigne, just to show their enthusiasm (and that the 'Sat Nav' of the captain and vice-captain greatly over estimated the time to get there).

Canon Frome batted first, and got off to a good start. Richards & Barnett knocking 9 off the first over. Unfortunately for the two openers, that was as good as it got. Richards(5) went in the second over, caught and bowled, chipping one back to the bowler. Barnett(4) went in the third over, caught at mid-off, driving one into mid-off's elbow (not hands, elbow!). This brought Cottrell & Childs to the crease, Cottrell fell in the fifth over caught for 0. S Andrews & M Rogers quickly followed suit with a duck each. Frome were 5 for 33.

Childs & Nixon put on a partnership of 51 for the next wicket before Nixon(14) followed in Richards footsteps with a chip to the bowler. Morgan(4) came out, flashed one for four and then edged one to the keeper. Young P Andrews was then brought to the crease and played his part in a very important partnership of 48 with Childs, who was now batting superbly, before being bowled for 4. The opening bowler returned to have Childs caught for an excellent 113 with Whittaker(13) and Mawby(6) ending up unbeaten. 178 for 9 at tea.

After tea, Frome went out with a positive attitude. Barnett was rewarded in his second over with the wicket of their opener for 1 with the aid of an excellent catch at backward square leg from S Andrews, 5-1. Cottrell had to wait for his wicket, but in his 8th over, sure enough, he took then new batsman for 30 caught behind by S Andrews. 60-2. The next wicket fell to P Andrews, taking the wicket of the opener in his first over. 66-3. P Andrews took the next wicket of a useful looking batsman on 21, caught behind by S Andrews. 101-4. Rogers then had a short spell with some mixed bowling, getting another batsmen caught behind by S Andrews. 111-5. P Andrews took the next wicket, with Morgan taking a catch out in deep midwicket. 122-6. Rogers then served up a full toss to bowl another batsman. 140-7. A mix up with the batsmen ending up in a run out helped Frome on their way. 165-8. S Andrews, fittingly took the final wicket caught behind by S Andrews.

Barnett ended with 1 for 48 off 12, Cottrell with 1 for 37 off 12, P Andrews with 4 for 43 off 11.2 and M Rogers 2 for 28 off 3.

Some excellent fielding, Richards' drop apart, helped Frome to win an excellent game by 7 runs.
