Second XI vs. Bartestree - 15 Jul - In form Bartestree too good

Canon Frome came off the back of an excellent win the previous week against Presteigne, but it was always going to be a struggle against in form Bartestree.

Frome opened the batting with Richards & Barnett, Barnett(6) fell early. but el capitano (aka M Richards) got off to a good start with J Smith. Smith(8) was caught with the score on 30-2. D Child(0) couldn't repeat the excellent performance of the previous week leaving the score at 35-3. Cottrell then came to the crease, and Richards(25) passed the baton on and promptly got out, caught, to the opening bowler. Cottrell & S Andrews then shared a partnership of 45 before Andrews got out caught as well. 91-5. Morgan(20) went to the crease and hit a quickfire 20. Morgan hit Bartestree's quick bowler for a 6, who responded with a quick straight delivery taking out his off peg. Cottrell was adjudged LBW on 44 leaving the score at 132-7. This brought C Andrews and Nixon to the crease, Nixon(1) leaving the crease shortly after, having been clean bowled. Rogers(2) came to the crease and also left shortly after arriving by chipping the ball to mid-on. This left P Andrews(3) and C Andrews(20) to push the score up to 157 for 9 at tea.

The bowling was kept tight at the start of the Bartestree innings, just 1 run off the first two overs. Unfortunately, a loose ball in each over gave Bartestree a chance to rattle along to 130 off 27 overs. P Andrews showed the bowlers how to do it, taking one of the openers in the 28th over for 48. Frome managed no more wickets, and with some sloppy fielding, Bartestree hit 160 in the 33rd over.

Cottrell finished with 0-21 off 7, Barnett with 0-40 off 8, Morgan with 0-26 off 5, P Andrews with 1-36 off 8 and Smith with 0-24 off 4.3.

All in all, the fielding was nowhere near the standard of last week against Presteigne and Frome could not set a total large enough to trouble Bartestree.
