Second XI vs. Ross - 22 Jul - Ross Donate Points

Ross began the game by batting, and Frome started strongly with Armitage taking a wicket in his first over. Cottrell and Armitage bowling a spell of 4 overs for 1 run and 1 wicket. From there, things ran away from Frome. The other opener made 73 before being bowled by Potter and the other batsman put on an unbeaten 154. Cottrell took the wicket of the new man on 26 caught by Matt Morgan and the new batsman came in, hit 8 runs before the Ross captain decided to declare with 2 overs to go.

This declaration donated Frome their two overs and 5 bowling points for the loss of opportunity to take 7 wickets in 2 overs. 298 for 3 at tea.

Some indifferent bowling from Rogers, Morgan & Andrews and a disappointing second spell from Armitage, along with more sloppy fielding, all contributed to a large score by Ross. Not to take anything away from the excellent centurion who hit all the loose balls and defended the good ones.

Frome went out to bat, keen to give the run chase a go. The Ross captain however was not so keen and immediately set a defensive field, even with 298 on the board.

Morgan may have been out on his first ball caught behind, but survived a confident appeal, only to be bowled later in the same over, still on 0. Cottrell & Childs then put on a steady partnership for the second wicket, taking the Frome total over 100 after 30 overs. When Cottrell(42) was adjudged LBW this brought Potter to the crease and he showed how hard he could hit the ball. Childs(60) was eventually bowled and S Andrews took his place and made short work of getting to 22 before offering a catch. Rogers came to the crease and hit some loose balls, and tried his best to get out to mid-on again. In fact, all Rogers managed to do was run Potter out on 23. Rogers and Nixon then set about aiming for 200. Rogers(14) was bowled trying to hit a ball in the last over and this left Nixon unbeaten on 14 and Armitage on 1.

All in all it was an excellent batting performance by both teams, with Frome making their biggest score of the season. Bring on Builth next week.
