First XI vs. Ross (Friendly) - 17 Apr - The new season is here!

Starting the new season with an away game at Ross, Frome lose the toss and Ross decide to bat first.

A superb start from Frome with the ball from openers Wilson and Smith, with Smith picking up three early Ross wickets to reduce Ross to 30-3 off 9 overs. Wilson bowled very tidily and was unlucky to get a wicket for his efforts. From there the Ross partnership of Hiram (62) and Warwick (130) took Ross along from 30-3 to 228-4, it could've been a lot different if a contentious LBW decision was given off Andrews bowling when the score was a lot less. The younger players (Miller, Jones, Williams) of Canon Frome did very well in the middle overs bowling against the already set Warwick and Hiram Wilson returned to the attack to remove Hiram and pick up a well deserved wicket, before Smith picked up his 4th wicket of Warwick. Nicko Evans grabbed 2 late wickets from consecutive balls and Ross finished on 247 for 7 from there 40 overs.

The Canon Frome innings got off to a steady start from the opening partnership of Andrews and Evans getting a 60 partnership before the first wicket off 11 overs before 3 quick wickets. A poor shot from Evans (19) saw the partnership broken, before Wilson (5) followed suit quickly trying to launch the Ross bowler but instead, getting bowled. Andrews (19) quickly followed after trying to quicken up the run rate before getting bowled from Stacey. This brought Smith and Fortnam to the crease, and they kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely with a 90 partnership against the spin attack of Ross. Fortnam was bowled for 30 by a good delivery, Smith batted very well to bring up his deserved half century (finishing up on 85 not out) but the total was just out of reach for Frome even with Williams launching a 6 in the closing overs that gave Frome some hope, nevertheless a decent performance for the first game of the season with promising signs for the league season which starts in 2 weeks time!
