Under 13 XI vs. Colwall - 23 Jul - Deja Vu

It was 'Déjà vu all over again' as the Frome ran up against stiff opposition in the form of a well drilled Colwall under 13 side containing a handful of county players. Colwall posted the exact same score of 171 runs against us today as they scored in the Under 11s match on the Sunday. Our reply wasn’t too far off either but this time we posted 77.
Colwall won the toss and elected to bat and in the process proved themselves to be a strong batting unit losing only two wickets. The first of these falling to a fine catch by George Harris off the bowling of Jasper Gilbert. George was a late addition to the side and we were glad to have him. The other wicket was a stumping by Eric Harris following a fine throw in from the field by Ciaran Freeman, another late addition to the side. From now on we will be contacting all our players on the morning of each match.
Whilst Colwall’s batting was exemplary it turned out that their bowling was even more formidable and their bowlers got more swing on the ball than any we’ve seen all season. Our batsmen (and women) stood strong against the onslaught but the figure of just 9 runs each for our two top scoring batsmen, Marcus Richards and Jasper Gilbert, tells its own story. Jasper it must be said went to the crease rather reluctantly but then decided he rather liked it and stayed in the middle for the rest of the Frome’s innings scoring a 4 and a number of quick singles and looking more at home with each delivery. Once again, Sam B found himself in the unenviable position of going out to face just 3 balls in the last over (two more than last time though it must be said) and he took full advantage of such bounty scoring a 4 off the first delivery.
The whole Canon Frome team gave a good account of themselves but it was not enough to threaten a strong Colwall team. Areas for improvement in the opinion of your humble correspondent would be the usual; we need to bat with more intent, looking for the gaps and sharpen up on our fielding but with Jamie Hawkins stopping shots with his knee one cannot fault the side for putting themselves on the line for the club.
A thank you must go out to Allen for setting out the field and umpiring and Sally for scoring the match. Thanks too to Lee for washing up after match and Phil for his support on the night.
